A conspiracy theorist goldmine this one is. I almost missed it it flew so low under the radar earlier this year. The thing with this is, I found myself equally--if not more--smart as the film's events played out. I knew every twist and turn, every revelation. However, unlike in most films, this particular handicap would become really annoying real fast. But for some reason, with this movie, I wasn't bothered by it.
The whole thing didn't quite turn out as monumentally bad as I was preparing myself for. In fact, I'm unaware if this film is the first in a series--like the other YA adaptations (Hunger Games; Maze Runner)--but if it happens to be so, then I think I might even be looking forward to, and will probably check out the next movie.
The one draw back from the whole film experience I'm afraid happens to be that going in to this one, readers might want to prepare themselves, you could easily see something similar on the CW network for free at home. That's right, it's YA so that means plenty of unnecessary 'pretty people' and romance drama, thrown in for the obligatory purpose of getting horny angst-driven teenagers to glance up from their cellphones for a minute.
This main criticism, felt throughout the entire film duration, really waters down the movie's material, and thus it's overall impact. My final grade, interesting, but FAR from need-to-see!
